Buying What You Love – Part I

Fashion Musings — July 29th, 2008

Why should you buy what you love? And how much money should you spend on one item? I’ve noticed that when I buy something I adore, I wear it for many, many years. I take especially good care of it. If I buy something just because it’s on sale or it’s inexpensive, I don’t get much use out of it and often I don’t take especially good care of it.
Does that mean you should save all of your money to buy a Balenciaga dress? Not necessarily, especially since a Balenciaga dress doesn’t fit most people’s lifestyle and budget.

It might mean spending $100 more than you would have wanted to on a pair of Bettye Muller shoes you adore.

Or it may mean spending twice as much as you wanted to on a coat which is the perfect color and fit for you.

This strategy might cost more in the short time, but in the long term you may actually end up saving money.

This is one of my favorite topics and I will be discussing it more in future postings.

The Colors of Paris

Travel — July 8th, 2008

I visited Paris for the first time in my life in May and I was struck by how much color permeated throughout the city.

The colors of the flowers were so saturated. I had never seen such beautiful colors before—I couldn’t stop taking photos of the flower markets.

And, of course, the colors in the art. My favorite museum was Musee de l’Orangerie.
The museum houses Claude Monet’s Nympheas (water lilies) displayed in large, oval white galleries which show off the gorgeous colors in Monet’s masterpieces.

Finally, I was struck by the colors of the Parisians’ clothing. I am more accustomed to New York City where the default color is black. Not so in Paris. I saw men in bright purple shirts or women wearing bright orange or pink purple scarves.

I think art and color are such a part of every day life that Parisians are not afraid to add a pop of color to their wardrobe. I love color already, but I want to keep this influence as a souvenir from my trip and include even more colors I love into my wardrobe.
